Dryer Vent Cleaning

The short answer

Dryer vent cleaning clears the lint out of the duct run between your dryer and the outside wall, hood included. It is $99 on its own, or $50 added to a job we are already at your house for. It takes 30 to 90 minutes. Lint narrows the run, the wet air cannot leave, and the load comes out of a full cycle still damp.

What does a dryer vent cost?

How it is booked Price
On its own $99
Added to a job we are already coming out for $50

The outside hood is included either way. There is no trip charge on the added price, because there is no extra trip.

We offer it at the booking step, once you have picked an arrival window and only when that window still has room for it. That is deliberate. Greg’s own finding is that selling the dryer vent after the fact does not work, so it gets offered while you are booking or not at all.

Why your clothes are still wet

A dryer dries by pushing hot, wet air out of the house. Lint lines the duct, the opening narrows, less air moves, and the water has nowhere to go. So the load runs twice, the laundry room stays warm and damp, and the dryer works harder for the same result. Clear the run and the same load dries in one cycle.

Lint also holds dampness, which gives mold somewhere to grow. Most people notice that as a musty smell in the laundry room that will not air out.

  • Air moves through the run again
  • One cycle instead of two
  • Less heat and moisture dumped into the laundry room
  • The musty smell in the laundry room goes with the damp lint
  • Less strain on the dryer

What the fire statistics actually say

We are not going to tell you a cleaning prevents a fire, because nobody can promise that. Here is the national picture, as national figures only. The US Fire Administration studied clothes dryer fires in residential buildings and found that failure to clean was the factor most often reported as contributing to ignition, at 34 percent, and that dust, fiber and lint were the items first ignited, at 28 percent. Those figures cover 2008 to 2010 and they are not Lowcountry figures (source).

That is the whole claim. Lint is what burns, and clearing it is cheap next to the alternative of not knowing.

What is dryer vent cleaning?

It is the removal of lint, debris and blockages from the exhaust duct that carries hot air and moisture from the dryer to the outside of the house. We clear the whole run, from the back of the dryer to the exterior vent cap, and the cap itself. Bird screens fitted over the outside hood are a common choke point, and they are the first thing we check.

Clearing the lint trap after every load is only part of it. The lint that matters collects deep in the run, where a shop vacuum and a broom handle do not reach.

Frequently asked questions

How much is dryer vent cleaning?

$99 on its own, or $50 added to a job we are already at your house for. The outside hood is included at both prices.

How long does it take?

30 to 90 minutes, depending on how long the run is and how much is in it.

Do you clean the outside hood?

Yes. The hood and the cap are part of the job, not an extra.

When do you offer the $50 price?

At the booking step, after you have picked an arrival window, and only when that window still has room for the extra time. Booking it then is what makes it $50 rather than $99.

How often should I have it done?

Once a year for a normal household. Sooner if you are running loads every day, if the run is long, or if clothes have started taking two cycles.

What are the signs I need it?

Clothes that are not drying in one cycle, a dryer that is hot to the touch, a musty smell in the laundry room, or lint showing around the outside hood.
