Why schools need it
Moisture is the thing to control in a school building. Moisture problems can be caused by roof and plumbing leaks, condensation, and excess humidity. Some of these problems have been linked to changes in building construction practices over recent decades, which have resulted in more tightly sealed buildings that may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems in schools are also associated with delayed or insufficient maintenance due to budget constraints, and temporary structures such as trailers and portable classrooms have frequently been associated with moisture and mold problems.
The National Center for Education Statistics surveyed the districts of about 1,800 public schools for its 2012-13 facilities report, published March 2014. It found the average number of years since construction of a school’s main instructional building was 44. Among schools with permanent buildings, the heating system, the air conditioning system and the ventilation/filtration system were each rated in fair or poor condition at 30 percent of schools, and 53 percent of public schools needed to spend money on repairs, renovations and modernizations to put their buildings in good overall condition (source).
The comfort of students and teachers contributes to learning in the classroom. Failure to respond promptly and effectively to poor indoor air quality in schools can lead to costly repairs, potential liability, and a greater risk that a school will need to close and temporarily relocate staff and students.
What Bactronix does about it
We find the water first. The EPA says it plainly: the key to mold control is moisture control (source). Then the surfaces get cleaned, and then they get treated with BactroKill Plus, an EPA-registered antimicrobial, EPA Reg. No. 82972-1-90746, applied by the Bactronizing electrostatic process, which puts a charge on the droplets so they wrap around a surface instead of landing only on the side facing the nozzle.
The HVAC side is its own job: the registers, the duct work, the cooling coil and the outside of the air handler. Work is planned around the timetable, so classrooms are done when the students are not in them.
Where nobody can find the source, mold testing takes air or surface samples and sends them to a lab. It is quoted rather than posted, because the number depends on how many samples get taken and where.
Guarantee terms for a commercial job come with the quote, in writing, alongside the price. On a house the treatment carries a 12-month limited guarantee: if what we treated comes back inside a year and no water or moisture was reintroduced to the area, we come back and re-treat it.
